One of the top Addresses in Chateauneuf du Pape that we offer every year, Clos des Papes, is one of the names that put the region on the map. This is our first offer of the 2020, which looks to be another fantastic vintage for this remarkable address. To this day, Clos de Papes continues as one of the best buys for CDP, upholding a very high level of quality that represents the region and the Clos des Papes name. Clos des Papes was certified organic in 2011, and it is their diligent vineyard management, coupled with their classical winemaking, that keeps them at the forefront in the region.
2020 is an elegant vintage for Clos des Papes. While it won't have the richness and power of the '19s, it will show the more finessed side of this producer with excellent complexity making for a bottle that could appeal to some of the Burgundy or Pinot Noir drinkers out there. However, this is still CDP at its core and is a very fine example of this classic estate. We have low pricing here today, and it is not a vintage of Clos de Papes to miss.
Decanter 98 points! "A very Clos des Papes vintage,' says Vincent Avril, and I know what he means - a vintage that naturally delivers the kind of fresh, elegant wines that this estate is famous for. A tasting of several foudres point to a wine with natural, easy balance. The Mourvèdre is excellent here this year, and adds great depth to the fresh and delightful Grenache that has notes of black tea, black cherry and iron. Elegant and very fine."
Wine Advocate (Joe Czerwinski) 96-98 points! "Proprietor Paul-Vincent Avril expects to bottle 100,000 bottles of something approximating this "final blend," tasted out of foudre. A blend of 55% Grenache, 35% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah and other permitted varieties, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape looked exceptional on this day, offering up scents of framboise and kirsch alongside dried flowers and Asian spices. Full-bodied yet weightless, silky and long, this is special stuff, complex and balanced."
