We rarely offer wine from Switzerland, and while they can be great examples of noble varietals like Pinot Noir, they typically come with a steep asking price. However, we have one today that breaks the mold from one of the Hammel Rolle Domaines, Clos du Chatelard—based in one of the most beautiful places in the world, clinging to the foothills of the Alps on a very steep hillside, nestled in a site of rocks and cliffs. This Clos of nearly eight hectares of terraced vineyards is surrounded by imposing stone walls and benefits from a superb microclimate conducive to cultivating grapes like Pinot Noir.
Sustainable viticulture has been practiced at this estate for many years to protect the environment, and grapes are always hand harvested with two sortings before fermentation. Afterward, the wine is aged in oak for 12 months. 2020 here is one of the best examples of the Cuvee des Sens of all time and a fantastic buy for Pinot Noir. While it doesn't have the mineral complexity we see in Burgundy, it more than makes up for its impressive complexity of fruit, flowers, and a lovely savoriness. It's such an elegant and poised wine and a great middle ground between the old world and new world Pinot Noir style that many of our clients will enjoy. With a considerable score below by Decanter, we have some of the only 2020 Cuvee des Sens bottles available worldwide.
Decanter 97 pts! "Fine, delicate and inviting, with pretty aromas of hibiscus, tea, red cherry and red berry, while the textured palate is graced with shapely tannins, savoury beetroot notes, smoky cedar and lush, rich red fruit."
