2020 Domaine Guillemot-Michel Viré-Clessé Quintaine

$29.99
2020 Domaine Guillemot-Michel Viré-Clessé Quintaine
Domaine Guillemot-Michel is considered the best producer in the Macconais, farming biodynamically tended, old vine Chardonnay, based in the village of Quintaine. We used to love these wines in the 2000s, which disrupted people's opinions on the wines from this southern part of Burgundy, from dull wines to exciting ones. Still, even after this time, Guillemot-Michel is not a widely known address, with very few wines imported to the US. The wines here are as good as ever, run by husband and wife Pierrette and Marc Guillemot, who were joined a few years back by their daughter Sophie and her husband, Gautier.
The Quintaine is a historic wine for this Domaine and is their most recognized wine. The Quintaine was the sole Cuvee of the Domaine from 1985 until 2014, it is a special Cuvee for the Domaine, and they put a lot of effort into it. Sourced from 6 hectares of vines, the grapes are hand-harvested and vinified in concrete vats with wild yeasts. We love the wines Vire-Clesse from producers like Lafon, but this is another level. In our opinion, this is the pinnacle of this often-overlooked part of Burgundy, with 2020 being one of the greatest versions of this wine of all time. It is fairly classic in profile this year, and it's a bit more refined than previous vintages with a cooler fruit profile that is less ripe and wouldn't be out of place among some of the great Cote de Beaune village wines. The 2020 Quintaine is approachable now but will soak up the cellar time and should continue to improve for many years. While it is an excellent value, the main reason we like this is that it shows Vire-Clesse in a light unlike anyone else and is just a downright fantastic example of White Burgundy.

Wine Advocate (William Kelley) 93+ points! "Another terrific wine from this address, the 2020 Viré-Clessé Quintaine exhibits aromas of citrus zest, white flowers, crisp melon and orchard fruit, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered palate that's racy and precise, concluding with a long, saline finish. At a pH of 3.09, this is a beautifully balanced, vibrant wine in this warm vintage, and it will richly reward some bottle age."
