While Jean-Michel Gaunoux is known for Meursault, they have a few other holdings outside of the village, like Les Folatières, which was exceptional in 2020 and just entered its drinking window. Les Folatières comes from a small parcel in one of Puligny’s most loved premier cru vineyards, known for its altitude and limestone-rich soils that yield structured, mineral-driven wines. The Domaine farms sustainably and vinifies traditionally with native yeasts, minimal new oak (typically around 20–25%), and extended lees aging without bâtonnage, aiming for purity and tension. The 2020 vintage yielded small quantities but exceptional quality, characterized by concentrated fruit and vibrant acidity, making it one of the top recent white Burgundy vintages and is the basis for the best example of Folatières ever from JM Gaunoux. Showing lifted aromas of citrus oil, white flowers, and crushed rock, with a linear, saline palate and precise finish, the Folatières is a serious wine for white Burgundy fans and a top buy at this low price!
Vinous (Neal Martin) 92-94 pts! The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has quite a concentrated bouquet with struck flint aromas filtering through the malic fruit. Maybe this just needs a little more cohesion. The palate is taut and fresh, quite saline and spicier than other Folatières that I encountered, quite tangy towards the finish. Give this three to five years in a bottle. Good potential. (Drink between 2025 - 2045)
