We are down to the last bit of this fantastic Grand Cru Chablis from Servin. As we have mentioned before, 2020 is another excellent vintage from Domaine Servin, who has been on a roll solidifying their place among best buy producers like Louis Michel. Servin has been producing some of the top values in Chablis and has been very consistent, with 2020 being one of the most notable vintages yet. An excellent vintage for Chablis, and though the harvest was early and challenging, those who put in the effort to stay ahead of the curve made exceptional wines. The 2020s are more classic in profile and show excellent mineral tension, whereas the 2019s remain a bit richer. The Bougros is fantastic this vintage and one of the best buys for Grand Cru Chablis. Located at the northwestern edge of the Grand Cru Sites, Bougros tends to be one of the most approachable of the Grand Crus on release, thanks to the fruit's ability to get a bit richer and riper. However, this is not without the classic aspects of Chablis, and Servin's old vines here, plated on Kimmeridgian soils, make for an imposing wine, especially this vintage. Big notes below by the regular crew, this is an outstanding buy for Grand Cru Chablis so take advantage of this pricing. 2020 is a vintage to buy now before they become harder to source and because the shortages in '21 will raise the pricing of many of our favorite French wines.
Wine Advocate (William Kelley) 93 pts! "The 2020 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros is performing well, offering up aromas of orange oil, crisp stone fruit, nutmeg and green apple, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny, incisive palate that's deep and intense but also unusually dynamic and precise for this cuvée; indeed, it's the best young Bougros I can recall tasting chez Servin."
Vinous (Neal Martin) 92-94 pts! "The 2020 Chablis Bougros Grand Cru is aged in barrel and goes through 100% malo (this sample was taken from a three-year-old barrel). It has a very seductive nose of yellow plum, stone fruit and honeysuckle. The generous palate is probably the most intense of Servin’s Grand Crus, and very harmonious, leading to a vibrant, ripe blood orange and white peach finish. This will be difficult to resist in its youth. So flattering. (Drink between 2024 - 2048)"
Burghound 91-94 pts! "Moderate wood stops short of being invasive on the mostly white fleshed fruit suffused nose of mineral reduction and briny water. The succulent but dense and powerful bigger-bodied flavors possess plenty of sappy dry extract that does a good job of buffering the firm acid spine shaping the clean and dry if mildly rustic finale. (Drink starting 2030)"
