A rising producer in Chablis, Jean-Paul Droin, comes from a long lineage of Chablis natives dating back to 1614 and is the 14th generation of his family to become a winemaker. Jean-Paul has some excellent holdings and has been producing some of the hottest wines Chablis the past few years. We've been impressed with the last few vintages, and 2019 was one of our top sellers for Chablis. One of the standouts from this Domaine is the Montee de Tonnerre from 50-year-old vines, which is a classic example of this vineyard seeing fermentation from wild yeasts in stainless steel and 10% new oak. This Cuvee always shows excellent aromatic complexity with white fruit, herbs, spices, and minerality enhanced with age. While the palate is very energetic, displaying the classic saline minerality that is synonymous with great Chablis. 2020 should equal the 2019s in quality and is a more classic vintage for the region, making for an incredible bottle. 2020 is a vintage to buy because with the disastrous weather in 2021; there will be minimal quantities available throughout many areas of France. We currently have the only bottles available of this new vintage in the USA.
Vinous (Neil Martin) 92-94 points! "The 2020 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru has a fresh, delineated, flinty and minerally bouquet that gains intensity in the glass. The palate is very well balanced, concentrated and already quite weighty in the mouth. This is underpinned by a superb seam of acidity, and there is tangible salinity on the finish. Superb."
Allen Meadows 91-94 points! "A cool, pure and elegant nose freely offers up airy aromas of citrus rind, white flowers, iodine and plenty of smoky mineral reduction. Here too there is very good volume and delineation to the focused and intense middle weight flavors that are at once caressing but punchy on the saline, youthfully austere and impeccably well-balanced finale. Good stuff and worth considering."
