We have a very limited amount of this excellent dry Reisling from Kunstler, which is one of the best buys of the vintage for GG Riesling. A fantastic effort from this traditional German estate, the 2020 is among the best examples of this wine of all time and worth checking out at this low pricing for fans of the dry Riesling.
One of the great Rheingau producers, Kunstler, is located in the famous village of Hochheim am Main. This address has been producing wine since 1648, and wines from this village were at one point in time some of the most sought after in the world, referenced in Shakperian texts and drawing attention from influential people like Thomas Jefferson, who made the voyage to visit this beautiful place. In 1965 the estate was reestablished by Franz Künstler and his son Gunter who took over in the 90s. The estate is pushing for 100% Organic cultivation and farms 11 hectares organically, with other vineyards not seeing herbicide use since 1992. This wine comes from the Weiss Erd, had has a unique classification, Erstes Gewachs, which is one of the few sites in Germany to have this status. It is a small site that benefits from a microclimate and its calcareous white marl soils. The vineyard's slope is moderate by german standards and allows for optimal sun exposure. At the same time, the roots are able to go deep into the earth due to its loosely packed soils, imbuing the wines with fantastic minerality. This site ripens slowly and allows the fruit to get excellent hang time developing optimal ripeness, power, and complexity. This is fermented dry, and while it has an intensity of fruit, acidity, and minerals, it is a harmonious wine. One of the top wines of the vintage for Kunstler, this is an excellent buy for German Riesling, and we have a friendly price on the only bottles currently available in the USA.
James Suckling 97 points! "A masterpiece from an almost unknown vineyard site. The cool and deep nose pulls you into this very concentrated and supple dry riesling GG that has so much power, packed into a sleek silhouette. Long, silky and chalky finish. Drink or hold."
Wine Advocate (Stephan Reinhardt) 94 points! "From white calcareous marls, the 2020 Kostheim Weiss Erd GG VDP. Grosse Lage opens with a clear, bright, fresh and substantial bouquet of weathered limestone and ripe, white (seed) fruit aromas. Fun-bodied yet vital and fresh, this is a textured, round and lush but vital and tensioned dry Riesling with grip and a clear, dry and stimulating finish. In warm years such as 2020, the Weiss Erd is one of Künstler's most exciting yet (still) underrated Rieslings only because he is the only top producer on this cru. The finish (of the 2020) is truly energetic and intense! I hope to one day re-taste the 2018, which I remember I found less exciting. 12.5% stated alcohol. Screw cap. Tasted in June 2022."
