It has been years since we have offered the wines from Patrick Piuze, but we were able to source two of his top 2020 crus. Unlike many that reside in Chablis with deep family roots, Patrick is not a local but a native of Monreal. After working at addresses like Leflaive, Jean-Marc Brocard, and Jean Michel Guffens, in 2008, Patrick took the plunge to start his own Domaine in Chablis, rapidly becoming one of the region's top priorities names. Patrick takes a page out of some of the top producers' books and focuses on the finely crafted and artisanal side of Chablis like producers like Raveneau and Dauvissat strive to make. His use of a traditional vertical press and older barrels which he only uses if they are from a high acid vintage for fermentation and aging, are two of the key factors to the classic style of the Piuze wines.
Though Patrick doesn't own any vines himself, he has a great relationship with some fantastic growers sourcing Grapes from some of the best Crus in the best locations of the vineyard. For example, the vines he uses for Butteaux lie next to Raveneau's and are 75 years old!
Vinification is hands-off, and fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts that can take anywhere from a few weeks to months.
The Butteaux and Vaulorent are two of the top wines from Piuze this vintage and are exceptional examples of 2020 Chablis. These are equally impressive wines and two not to miss Chablis this vintage, and as we have been saying, it's a vintage to buy now because '21 and '22 will be limited and expensive. Low pricing here with big notes from John Gilman below.
John Gilman 94 pts! The 2020 Vaulorent from Patrick Piuze is outstanding. The bouquet is pure, precise and complex, wafting from the glass in a suave mix of apple, pear, chalky minerality, a touch of raw almond, white lilies, beeswax and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, precise and nicely reserved in personality, with a full-bodied format, a lovely core of fruit, excellent soil signature and a long, nascently complex and vibrant finish. This wine has beautiful grip and purity and all it needs is some time in the cellar to properly blossom.
