We were able to get a bit more of the 2020 Sea Field from Raen, which is outstanding this vintage and the best example of this wine so far. After establishing Continuum with their father, Tim Mondavi, Carlo & Dante decided to venture out independently and established Raen winery in 2013. The philosophy here was to make classic cool-climate Pinot Noir. They have accomplished this in spades and now produce some of the best Pinot Noir from Sonoma Coast. The Pinot Noir clones they work with are Calera, Pommard, 828, rVR1, and 667 clones, and all the vineyards are organically farmed. The ferments are done with native yeasts; depending on the vintage, a percentage of whole clusters are employed.
Sea field is Considered the most elegant bottling from Raen and is sourced from vines at 1,000 feet in elevation just miles from the cool Pacific Ocean. This coastal influence has a significant impact on the wine and develops more cool climate Pinot Noir characteristics that many of us love.
2020 is another magnificent vintage for Raen, but it was a tiny crop making many of the wines this vintage very limited. These were some of our best-selling high-end Domestic Pinot Noirs last year, and because we sold a sizeable amount, we were able to secure an allocation of this limited vintage. Sea Field is not a bottle to miss from Raen and could be enjoyed by both the New and Old world Pinot drinkers out there.
James Suckling 98 pts! "Cranberries, rose stems, rose petals, crushed rocks, iron and stone. It’s full-bodied, yet so tight and racy, with superb length. This came from only the top part of the vineyard, because of pressure from the fires. A wonderful young pinot, but needs time to show its true self."
