Always a sweet spot Super Tuscans, Sassicaia's second label, takes notes from its older sibling and is a beautiful bottle again in 2020. Guidalberto is always well composed, elegant, and sophisticated, an excellent buy for the category with some sneaky longevity if left in the cellar. It puts on some nuance with a few years in the cave though we typically don't have the patience as it sings with a good bit of aeration out of the gate. Guidalberto is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grown on limestone and clay with a south, southwest exposure between 300 and 1000 feet of elevation. Grapes are harvested by hand before extensive sorting, followed by a very gentle pressing to avoid excess tannins, many of which are sourced from plots that don't make it into Sassicaia. Alcoholic fermentation occurs in stainless steel vats with wild yeasts with maceration of around 13 days for the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Malolactic fermentation occurs in vats as well before transferring to mostly French Oak, with a small percentage of American Oak to age about 15 months.
2020 is another excellent vintage for this wine and is among some of the top examples of all time. A more elegant and focused example, 2020 is finely knit and pure vintage that shows good richness but doesn't go over the top. It is one of the best vintages we have tasted, and we think our clients will enjoy this more refined style this year. So complex and elegant, there is a reason why this is one of the best Super Tuscan buys. We have a limited amount in stock, and it is defiantly worth checking out at this friendly pricing.
Vinous (Antonio Galloni) 92 points! "The 2020 Guidalberto is a gorgeous, classy wine. Less opulent than it can be, the 2020 impresses with its energy and drive. Sweet red cherry, plum, mint, rose petal, cedar and pipe tobacco all take shape in this super-attractive, mid-weight offering from Tenuta San Guido. There's a bit more Merlot in the 2020, but Guidalberto is increasingly made from lots that don't make it into Sassicaia, which explains the style of recent vintages. This is a terrific showing, especially considering the recent bottling. It's a fine relative value in Bolgheri's high-rent district. (Drink between 2024 - 2032)"
Wine Advocate (Monica Larner) 92 points! "The 2020 Guidalberto is taut and tight with plenty of tart cherry and wild berry. The wine offers great freshness and tension with bay leaf, spice, wild cherry and pressed lavender buds. There is a hint of black olive too. The blend is equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot."
James Suckling 92 points! "Nice freshness on the palate with plums and berries and citrusy acidity. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins and a powdery texture. Hints of mushrooms. You can enjoy this young, but it will age nicely, too. Drink or hold."
