2021 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux Vieilles Vignes

$49.99
2021 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux Vieilles Vignes
We have some of the limited 2021 Butteaux VV from one of the top addresses in Chablis, Louis Michel. The Buttreaux VV comes from 60+-year-old vines that are naturally low-yielding, giving the VV bottling more concentration and complexity than the regular bottling of Louis Michel's Butteaux. The Butteaux VV is an excellent premier cru showing the richness that the vineyard is known for but so balanced and deep from the old vines, with serious minerality. There is no oak here, just stainless steel, making this a very pure vineyard-driven Chablis.
Chablis has been hit with many warm vintages over the past few years, and while they have been great, the 2021s, being a much cooler year, are a much more true-to-form example of the classic style of Chablis with high-acid wines that captured the unique characters of terroir. The '21 here is one of the best of all time, and at pricing that is rare this vintage because of the smaller crop, and when you factor in the already limited yields from these old vines, the production this vintage is tiny. We have low pricing today on this excellent premier cru from Louis Michel, and it is not one to miss for fans of this address or those looking for a great Chablis buy.

John Gilman 94 points! "The 2021 Butteaux “Vieilles Vignes” had not yet been bottled and was showing beautifully as a result. The deep and pure bouquet jumps from the glass in a blend of pear, green apple, fresh lime, straw, a nice touch of smokiness, citrus zest and a complex base of chalky minerality. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, complex and mineral-driven, with zesty acids, impeccable balance and a long, focused and bouncy finish. Fine, fine juice."

Decanter (Andy Howard MW) 94 points! "Louis Michel's old-vine Butteaux comes from vines with an average age of 65 years (45 years in the 'standard' bottling). The soil here is white clay - very dense in texture and poorly drained. An excellent balance of power and richness here with lemon/lime notes on the palate, all kept taut and in line by the vibrant hit of acidity. This could compare favorably with many a grand cru."

Burghound 91-94 points! "This is aromatically quite similar to the regular cuvée though on the palate there is a bit more volume to the superbly intense, powerful and focused finale that is slightly firmer as well. This is potentially terrific and definitely one to look for."
