Schafer-Frohlich continues its reign as one of the most prolific and perused producers of Großes Gewächs Rieslings. It's been a while since we have offered the wines here, but the 2021s are fantastic, and we have two top GGs today from this revered address. Dry Rieslings have gained popularity over the last decade, much like lower Dosage Champagnes have, and it is easy to see why. With the lower sugar levels, the minerality and purity of fruit come to the forefront and are slightly richer yet so vibrant. Winemaker Tim Frolich is at the top of his game, with the Felsenberg being exceptional this vintage. Felsenberg is an excellent site, and the vines are old and planted on weathered volcanic porphyry soils with quartz delivering a delicate, pure, and more fine-nerved profile with profound minerality and depth. A top example from Schafer Frolich this vintage this is an excellent buy for the category we have friendly pricing on some of the only bottles available in the USA.
Wine Advocate (Stephan Reinhardt) 96-97 points! "From porphyry soils, the 2021 Felsenberg GG offers a pure yet intense and elegant, darker toned and flinty bouquet of crushed stones with plummy notes, delicate spices and herbal notes. Full-bodied, pure and fresh on the palate, with fine tannins and ripe and refined acidity, this is a lush and round but finely tannic and aromatic Felsenberg with enormously salinity on the intense and aromatic, crisp and crunchy finish. Tasted as a sample at the domaine in July 2022."
