We have a fantastic buy from the new 2021 vintage from Vietti today, marking one of the most outstanding examples of La Crena of all time. Vietti is an esteemed winery located in the Piedmont region of Italy, specifically in the village of Castiglione Falletto at the heart of the Barolo area. Established in the early 20th century, with roots tracing back to the 19th century, Vietti has grown to own approximately 37 hectares of vineyards. Renowned for its Barolo and Barbera wines, Vietti combines traditional winemaking methods with modern techniques, a practice initiated under the pivotal leadership of Alfredo Currado in the 1960s. The winery, which was among the first in the area to use stainless steel fermentation while continuing to age its Barolo in large Slavonian oak casks, has played a significant role in elevating the status of Piedmontese wines on the global stage. Despite being acquired by the Krause family in 2016, the Currado family remains integral to Vietti's operations, ensuring a continued commitment to quality and tradition with many impressive releases from some of the great vineyards of Piedmont. The wines here have never been better, and this Barbera sourced from south facing the 6-hectare Crena vineyard near the village of Agliano Terme is one of the best buys from Vietti this vintage. This shows the incredible winemaking from Vietti at a much lower price than the Barolos and is an excellent example of this more concentrated vintage. Two huge notes below: this will surely be one of the best Barberas of 2021.
Antonio Galloni 96 points! "The 2021 Barbera d'Asti La Crena is exceptional. Bright, red-toned fruit, chalk, mint, white pepper and rose petal are all beautifully delineated. In recent times Vietti has focused more on freshness in their Barberas, and that is especially evident in La Crena-a wine that used to be very dark and heavy but is far from that today. Clean, mineral notes extend the vibrant finish. Give this a few years to develop the full range of its aromatic breadth. What a wine!"
Decanter 95 points! "Although best known for its Barolos, Vietti (now part of the US Krause Group) also releases a number of different Barberas. La Crena is from a 6ha site near the commune of Agliano Terme in the Nizza area. The vineyard, purchased in 1995, was planted in 1932. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel and the wine then spends 18 months in a combination of steel, large casks and barriques before bottling. Stephen Brook: Opulent nose, with dark fruits tempered with some stylish oak. Suave and juicy, fine texture, balanced by firm acidity, which gives some spice and flair to the finish. Vincenzo Arnese: Candied aromas of Morello cherry and wild strawberry, very expressive. Bold palate with robust tannins; time will smooth it, yet quite rich and pleasant. Sara Bachiorri: Cherry and juniper berry nose. Nice concentration, with intense Maraschino flavours and a touch of liquorice stick."
