2022 Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Meursault 1er Cru Charmes

$99.99
2022 Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Meursault 1er Cru Charmes

A follow up to our offer of Clos des Chenes yesterday, today we have one of the best white wines made here, the Meursault Charmes. As mentioned, we've always considered Bitouzet-Prieur a timeless example of Burgundy in both colors. The wines are classic but not rustic, age-worthy but not excruciatingly tannic, and subtle, understated, terroir-driven versions of Meursault and Volnay. Vincent Bitouzet is a fantastic winemaker and has an old-school flair to his production, which we always come back to. The wines always receive better notes than numbers, and we think the absence of critical hype has kept them a nice little secret all these years for those who like classic Burgundy. They own beautiful holdings and enviably nice parcels in Meursault Charmes, and this is always the case; the Charmes has lovely refinement and focus and is a great example of what this vineyard can produce, marrying the fruit from heavier clay soil with the minerality achieved in the best blocks. Pricing, as always, is very reasonable for Crus from a small Domaine, with 2022 being very close to the quality of 2020, and it is a fantastic vintage for Bitouzet. We have a limited amount of the Charmes at this low pricing, and it's an early best buy for 2022 Premier Cru Meursault at this low pricing.

Vinous (Neil Martin) 91-93 points! "The 2022 Meursault Les Charmes ler Cru has a very attractive nose with yellow fruit, peach skin, touches of beeswax and crushed stone. The oak is very nicely integrated. The palate is well-balanced, the 20% new oak well-judged, and the crisp acidity imparts freshness and tension. It delivers the concentration you expect from a Charmes, with the orange peel and tangerine finish lingering nicely in the mouth."

Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy) 90-93 points! "Mid lemon yellow. This is rather more open on the nose, with an easy white fruit, no great detail as yet but showing more on the palate. Quite intense apples with some ripe citrus rind alongside, medium plus bodied, fair length. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: November 2023."
