One of the absolute favorites and best buys for the Loire, Marc Olivier and the team at Domaine de la Pepiere have been making incredible wines for many years, and the Clos des Briords is always one of the most limited and most loved bottlings. Though Marc has retired, the estate is in good hands and is currently being run by Rémi Branger, who has worked with Marc since 2005 and helped push the Domaine to organics.
Clos des Briords comes from the estate's oldest massalle selection vines that were planted between the '30s and '50s on a granite bed and farmed biodynamically. 100% Muscadet or, as it is locally known, Melon de Bourgogne, the minerality is the main focus here, coming from sandy soils rich with a special type of granite higher in minerals and clay. Citrus fruits, white flower petals, rich leesy notes, and a refreshing bone-dry finale really ties this one up, and is such an impressive wine for such a small asking price. The traditional pair is with oysters, but any seafood would be excellent, and this is much more interesting than your typical Muscadet quaffer. As we have said for years, this is very Champagne-Esque minus the bubbles and surprising with a bit of age on it. 2022 is going to be a fantastic year for the Loire and possibly one of the best in decades. The wines are fresh, with excellent richness and ripeness, met with classic zippy acidity and mineral backbone but with a touch more delectable fruit. It has been a while since we have offered this one, but 2022 is a vintage not to miss for this wine, and we have an early jump here with the only available bottles in the USA.
