2022 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py

$34.99
2022 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py
We have more of the current release of Cote du Py from the biodynamic master, Jean Foillard, just in time for the new score from Vinous. A brilliant biodynamic farmer like Lapierre and Yvon Metras, Foillard has a more serious style that often reminds us of Burgundy wines with their intricacy and nuance. These are also very age-worthy wines that can be surprising after a few years in the cellar and are not dominated purely by fruit. Cote Du py is Foillard's flagship wine, which is consistently one of the best examples of the vintage for Beaujolais, always receiving high marks. Sourced from vines that range from 10 to 90+ years old and planted on Schist granite, the Cote du Py sees the traditional whole cluster Beaujolais fermentation with oak aging for 6-9 months.
The 2022 Beaujolais vintage faced unusual weather, including a late start to spring, a hot May, and a stormy June with hail. Despite these challenges, the vines stayed healthy, leading to a harvest of high-quality grapes, though in lesser amounts than usual. The wines from this year are expected to have deep colors and rich fruit flavors, suggesting a notable vintage , and from Foillard, they should be excellent. 2020 should be able to be approached earlier but still have the balance to age. The Cote du Py is the pinnacle of Morgon and one of the greatest Beaujolais made annually. We have a great price on this new release from Foillard, and for fans of Beaujolais, this is a serious example worth buying every year. This is the lowest price we have been able to offer this wine in a few years, so grab some while you can!
Vinous (Neal Martin) 93 pts!  The 2022 Morgon Côte du Py has another very attractive bouquet with just a touch more fruit intensity than the Côte du Py, wonderful mineralité and tension. Very composed. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a little sturdier than the Cuvée Corcelette. There’s fine grip toward the finish with a persistent peppery aftertaste. Be patient. (Drink between 2027 - 2037)
