2022 Jean-Paul & Benoit Droin Chablis 1er Cru Montmains

$39.99
2022 Jean-Paul & Benoit Droin Chablis 1er Cru Montmains

We have another excellent example from Droin today, this time a current release from the 2022 vintage, which is a fantastic year for this great address. Jean-Paul Droin comes from a long lineage of Chablis ancestors dating back to 1614 and is the 14th generation of his family to become a winemaker. Jean-Paul has some excellent holdings and has produced some of Chablis's most sought-after wines. We've been impressed with the last few vintages, and these are always some of the best sellers in any given vintage. We have a limited amount of one of the top examples from this address in 2022, Montmains. Sourcing from a 2.15-hectare parcel from vines that are close to 50 years old, one of the standout characteristics of this vineyard is the gentle slope that acts as a stopping point for larger Kimmeridgian marl with a high proportion of clay. Droin believes that this is the deepest and richest of all the premier crus while also calling it very Burgundian. It is a concentrated wine that shows yellow and orchard fruit with notes of toasted almond and, with time, develops more flavors of brioche and toast while never losing its freshness and minerality. One of the top buys for 2022 Chablis, we have low pricing today on a few cases, and it's not one to miss this vintage.

Decanter 93 points! "Although these a rich, deep soils, Droin says they retain a lot of seashell character. Lively and fresh on the palate, you can feel the cool terroir combined with warm, ripe fruit. Very classy and will age beautifully. Benoit Droin explains that the argile-bleu (blue clay) found here adds extra volume. (Drink between 2025 - 2030)"

Vinous (Neil Martin) 91-93 points! "The 2022 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru offers scents of grapefruit and orange rind on the nose, less flamboyant than the Vaillons, yet showing impressive delineation already. The palate is well-balanced, with a tangy opening and hints of marmalade infusing the citrus fruit with an almost steely finish. This will need time in bottle."

Burghound 90-93 points! "Prominent notes of mineral reduction and just picked white flowers suffuse the aromas of tidal pool, algae and zest. The rich but vibrant medium weight flavors possess even more obvious minerality that seems to become more obvious on the cool, firm and delineated finish that is clean, dry, citrusy and sneaky long. Lovely."
