One of the best buys for Red Burgundy Right now, the 2022 Coteaux Bourguignons from Le Petit Domaine Doyle is a beautiful wine from just outside the confines of Vosne-Romanee. The daughter of the micro domaine Nathalie Vigot, winemaking is a family tradition, and this is a beautiful example of how good Couteaux Bourguignons can be.
A big hit last year among our Burgundy Clients, 2022 is the new release and the 3rd vintage we have offered of Le Petit Domaine Dole. A very small Vosne-Romanee producer, and as some may remember, the wines are made by Nathalie Vigot's daughter, Marjorie Dole. Majorie is breaking onto the scene like her mother with an ultra-tiny production, borrowing some of mom's old-vine Couteaux Bourgignon vines right outside the Vosne designation. While it's not Vosne-proper, this is seriously well-made and one of the standouts in this category. For those unfamiliar, Couteaux Bourgignon was formerly called Bourgogne Grand Ordinaire or Bourgogne Ordinaire, a designation given in the 1930s for wines deemed everyday wines and allowed for the use of a wider variety of grapes, including muskat, Cesar, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Blanc. Couteaux Bourguignon has become the testing ground for many Burgundy producers looking to experiment, and while this is less of an experiment and more of a case of an old family vineyard where they planted what they had, maybe even for a house wine. The label on the bottle states "La Vigne a Mamie" or Granny's Vines.
The vineyard Majroie sources from is mostly Pinot Noir, with a few sticks of very old vine Gamay scattered throughout, which is just too good to be replanted. If Nathalie Vigot only makes 600 bottles a year of Couteaux Bourgignon, her daughter's production here has to be next to nothing. The Dole wines are nearly impossible to find outside of Europe, but they are fantastic, with beautiful upfront appeal and a touch of Vosne structure and minerality. It's a unique insider Burgundy from possibly the new smallest producer in Burgundy. We may see some Petit Monts from Le Petit Domaine Dole someday, but this is it for now. This is an excellent bottle for those looking to explore Burgundy and stay current while simultaneously being a fantastic value for Pinot Noir from the new and old world.
Majorie has also started bottling a Couteaux Bourgignon Blanc, which is even rarer than the rouge. Made with Chardonnay, we have some of the Blanc available as well here for the same price as the rouge. Very Limited.
