Outside the Loire Valley in France, the greatest examples of the Chenin Blanc grape come from South Africa. The Reyneke Chenin Blanc is a stunning example of this beautiful grape from Biodynamically farmed 50-year-old vines. 2022 is a classic example of Chenin Blanc: yellow fruits, apples, saline, and minerality give way to a chiseled yet refined palate with a long finish and tons of dry extract and salinity. The palate is very concentrated, no doubt, from the low yields and old vines, yet there is incredible balance and lovely persistence. 2022 is a smaller but great vintage for South Africa, and this wine is a star. I would love to put this up against Huet and Foreau in a blind tasting, and it would most certainly hold its own and even come out on top (and at a lower price). This is really worth checking out and is a fantastic, world-class example of Chenin Blanc from this part of the world. Super impressive and showing incredibly well now, this is highly recommended.
Vinous (Neal Martin) 94 pts! "The 2022 Chenin Blanc comes from the two old blocks planted in 1974 and 1976. It is whole bunch pressed, but unlike Sauvignon Blanc, it is not settled and matured in fourdes and used 300-liter oak, where it stayed for ten months on the lees. It has a very delineated banquet with Granny Smith scents and light sea spray aromas, a very Zen-like Chenin that expresses the granitic terroir. The well-balanced palate has a slight viscosity on the entry, a little richer than previous vintages, but without compromising tension, with hints of peach and yellow plum towards the finish excellent!"
