It has been far too long since we have offered anything from Samuel Billaud, but we have a fantastic cru from this small address today featuring one of the favorite Chablis vineyards, Montee de Tonnerre. The Billaud name is easily recognized in Chablis thanks to Billaud-Simon; in fact, Samuel was the winemaker at Billaud Simon for almost 20 years before leaving in 2015 to start his own label, which we have seen many producers do with fantastic success. The experience that he gained working for his family was immeasurable, and he’s now producing fantastic Chablis in a new facility where he is free to make wines how he wants. The wines here display an incredibly pure expression of Chablis, and Samuel, in just a few years, has already carved out a nice spot among the top addresses of Chablis. These wines are still relatively under the radar and rare in the US, but as we suspected, they are starting to gain traction, with 2022 having the potential to be the best of all time. A super classic example of Montee de Tonnerre sourced from a parcel right next to Raveneau, this is a fantastic wine and, with a bit of time in the cellar, should be phenomenal, rubbing shoulders with the best examples of Montee de Tonnerre.
Vinous (Neil Martin) 93-95 points! "The 2022 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru comes from two parcels (one in Haut Chapelot near Raveneau and the other in Montée de Tonnerre lieu-dit). The strict nose has crushed stone scents, hints of damp moss and sea cave. Very fine delineation. The palate has a penetrating entry with another killer line of acidity. It is tensile and steely with serious weight towards the grippy finish. Very sustained, this is a brilliant Montée de Tonnerre."
Burghound 91-94 points! "An elegant, pure and beautifully airy nose presents ripe but wonderfully fresh aromas of mineral reduction, acacia blossom and oyster shell. The racy and borderline painfully intense middleweight flavors also exude a bracing minerality that adds a sense of lift to the detailed, focused and lingering finale. Other than a trace of backend warmth, this is a classic MdT."
