We have one of the best values for Germany in 2022 from one of the smaller names in the area, Gunther Steinmetz. This estate has produced excellent Riesling in the Middle Mosel since 1900, soucing from old, very steep vineyards. This environmentally conscious estate puts sustainability at the forefront, tending to its old vine parcels with great care and respect for the land. In its third generation of operation, Gunther Steinmetz is known for making some very impressive values, and we have another leading example today from the Piesporter. Like the Piesporter Treppchen we offered, the Piesporter Grafenberg comes from the same area but just not as prestigious of a vineyard. This site is characterized by pure slate encampments that rise 650 feet above the river in an amphitheater-like setting with panoramic views. There are documents on this site dating as early as the year 777, showing the oldest written viticulture record in the Mosel. This site naturally has excellent exposure and features vines grown on a 55-degree slope, with hills blocking cold easterly winds, as well as the forested hilltops above the vineyards, which exhale cool air at night and thus increase the fluctuations between day and night temperatures, increasing the aromatics of the grapes.
While the Piesporter Treppchen is one of the wines of the vintage here at half the price, the Piesporter Grafenberg is hard to pass up and is a beautiful Kabinett this vintage. 2022, as we have mentioned before, is a fantastic vintage here and one of the best of all time, with a beautiful lineup of wines. This is one of the best buys of the vintage, and we have a limited amount at lower pricing than previous years. This is not one to miss for Riesling fans looking for a great deal.
James Suckling 94 points! "A stunning Mosel riesling Kabinett with stacks of yellow peach and red vineyard peach aromas. Very exciting interplay between racy acidity and concentrated and juicy fruit on the sleek palate. Enormous wet stone minerality at the super-energetic finish. Drink or hold."
