The 2023 is powerful yet delicate, offering wild cherry, strawberry, violets, rose petals, white pepper, and Mediterranean herbs, with fine tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, savory, mineral finish. Yes, there is blood orange and cranberry, bitter cherries, the smell of rose petals after rain and some elusive spice, but what is more important is that I suddenly wanted to own cases of this wine. It’s an ambassador for Sicily, as vivid, arresting and confusing as the whole ancient island, and a reminder to resist the cliches. This is vigour, not lassitude; energy, not managed decay. It comes in at a svelte 12.5 percent octane in 2023 and offers up a bright and complex bouquet of desiccated dark berries, a lovely array of spice tones, cola, a fine base of soil, woodsmoke, anise and a lovely rangy of sweet botanicals in the upper register. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, complex and impeccably balanced, with a lovely core of black fruit, fine soil signature and grip, modest tannins and a long, precise and classy finish. I really love the wines from Arianna Occhipinti and wish that I had more opportunity to taste them with regularity. This lovely wine was actually tasted in Chablis in January with Vincent Dauvissat and a group of visitors to his domaine at the end of our Chablis tasting. Fine, fine juice.
