Valmur sits in the small valley between Les Clos and Vaudésir, with Moreau’s old Chardonnay vines rooted in notably clay-rich soils across both southeast- and northeast-facing parcels, giving the wine more breadth and power than many of the domaine’s other Grand Crus. The 2023 was raised 60% in stainless steel and 40% in barrel, a combination that works beautifully here, adding texture and dimension without obscuring the site's freshness and minerality. This is a fuller, more tactile style of Chablis, with ripe white orchard fruit, green apple and citrus zest layered with crushed shell, chalk, subtle spice and a distinctly saline mineral character. The wine has excellent texture and concentration through the middle, but a lively thread of acidity keeps it focused and energetic through a long, stony finish. It can be approached earlier, but plenty of structure remains beneath the fruit for serious development in the cellar. It is one of the best wines in Christian Moreau’s excellent 2023 lineup and a great buy at this low price!

John Gilman 95+ points! "Domaine Moreau’s 2023 Valmur is equally complex and promising as the Vaudésir, but the wine is even a bit more reserved out of the blocks and will demand just a couple of years longer in the cellar before it blossoms. The wine’s aromatic constellation is outstanding, delivering scents of lemon, pear, a complex foundation of chalky soil tones, paraffin, dried flowers and a gentle framing of oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused, deep and very pure, with great soil signature, a beautiful core of fruit, lovely acids and grip and a long, seamlessly balanced and very, very promising finish. Just give it a bit of hibernation time. "

Decanter 94 points! "The Valmur from Domaine Christian Moreau is a vivacious wine with abundant aromas of ripe pear and melon, hints of acacia blossoms and spice underpinned with a flinty minerality. The texture has tension and snap, yet there a rich, almost plump side here that remains perfectly balanced with the crisp acidity; the finish echoes with a hint of 'beautiful bitterness'. The grapes are mostly from the 0.70ha parcel facing southeast; there is a bit from the northeast-facing side for balance. Undoubtedly charming on release, this will effortlessly age for 20 years or more."

Vinous (Neal Martin) 93 points! " The 2023 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru is more old school, with greener, apple-like fruit. It's quite stony and more reserved than the Vaudésir. The palate is fresh and vibrant, with a lively thread of acidity. This is composed, with a dash of spice toward the finish that has put on a bit of weight since last year. The 2023 is very promising. "

Bughound 93 points! " A pungent nose of smoky reduction, citrus and moderate wood toast is all that can be discerned at present so be sure to give this some air if you're tempted to open a bottle young. Otherwise, the rich, powerful and concentrated broad-shouldered flavors also possess plenty of sappy dry extract before concluding in a lemony, dry and moderately austere finale. This is a big and firmly structured wine that is quite promising."

Jasper Morris MW 93 points! " Pale lemon and lime colour.
