Clos de la Romanée is a Pinot Noir from the Coteaux de l’Auxois, an increasingly interesting area just west of the Côte d’Or where rolling hills of limestone and clay provide excellent conditions for Burgundy’s classic varieties. In the hands of Sophie and Alain Meunier, who have farmed the domaine organically since 1991, the wine receives the same thoughtful treatment that has made Confuron a respected name in the Côte de Nuits. The fruit is completely destemmed, given a short cold maceration, and fermented gently before élevage in barrel, with only a modest amount of new oak to keep the fruit on the main stage. The generous 2023 vintage gives the Clos de la Romanée beautiful fruit and immediate charm, with ripe cherry, wild strawberry, and raspberry joined by violets, subtle earth and spice, framed by supple tannins and bright freshness. While fruit-focused, there is real Burgundian elegance and transparency here without the increasingly formidable pricing attached to the domaine’s Côte de Nuits wines.
