Louis Michel has been based in Chablis since the 19th century and is known for an uncompromisingly pure style, fermenting and aging exclusively in stainless steel to preserve the character of each vineyard rather than overlay it with oak. The Vieilles Vignes bottling comes from a superb parcel planted in 1955 at the top of the Butteaux slope, where south-southeast exposure, excellent air circulation and limestone-rich Kimmeridgian soils give the wine both concentration and remarkable mineral drive. The domaine considers the site important enough to vinify separately and age with the seriousness of a Grand Cru, with long indigenous-yeast fermentation followed by 20 to 24 months in stainless steel. The 2024 vintage was exceptionally difficult and yields across Chablis were dramatically reduced, but the best wines have a wonderfully old-school character, with bright acidity, lower alcohol and intense minerality. On the palate the wine is deep, zesty and full-bodied, with the vintage’s pure and succulent fruit at the core, great soil signature and grip, a fine spine of acidity and a very long, mineral-infused and racy finish.
