Antoine Sanzay, based out of Saumur-Champigny, has been pushing to the top of the game in the Loire for a few years now. Focusing on Cab Franc like his neighbor and vineyard sharing giants of "Les Poyeux," Clos Rougeard, Antoine Sanzay shows the little guy's power with a commitment to the expression of the grape and the land. Sanzay's presence among similar producers is part of the organic movement of the Loire, creating expressive wines, each unique to their terroir. The vines from Poyeux are over 50 years old at this point, imbuing the grapes with a lovely concentration and depth. Juicy yet structured with the typical herbaceous notes from Cab Franc, all seamlessly interwoven, it's brilliant. This undoubtedly stands up to some of the Clos Rougeard cuvees at a fraction of the price and is one of the best buys for Cabernet Franc in the Loire. 2017 saw some weather difficulties, and in Saumur-Champigny, yields were down around 30%, but the remaining grapes were beautifully ripe, and overall it was a high-quality vintage for Sanzay. Antoine Sanzay is one of the helmsmen of the Loire's small Domaines, and his Tete de Cuvee the Poyeux is a giant slayer.
