A rare find from one of the great addresses of Burgundy. Emmanuel Rouget is the nephew of the very famous Henri Jayer and began his mentorship with his uncle in 1985, eventually inheriting all of the vines that were once Jayer's, including his famed Cros Parantoux vineyard. While this doesn't see fruit from the Cros Parantoux vineyard, it is a rare example of Cremant from one of the best names in Burgundy. This Cremant is made from 100% Chardonnay grown in Flagey-Echezeaux, which is not a typical appellation for Chardonnay, meaning that the domain probably has some old family vines that they cannot use in a regular Burgundy bottling, and instead of replanting them and making a lesser quality Burgundy, they choose to make a lovely sparkling wine with the fruit. This follows the traditional Champagne method of sparking winemaking with secondary fermentation in the bottle and sees a low dosage. A very energetic and mineral-driven example of Cremant, this has some good depth and complexity at this level and is a rather finely crafted example of Cremant. Still, we wouldn't expect anything less from a Domaine like Rouget. An exciting and affordable find from Burgundy, we have excellent pricing here on some of the only bottles available in the USA. If you love traditional sparkling wines and the history of Burgundy, this is one to try.
