A brilliant producer in the village of Verzenay in the Montagne de Reims, David Pehu is the 4th generation of his family to become a winemaker. Though we have only offered a few wines from this address, they are incredible and highly detailed expressions of this terroir, and Pehu's signature is a more robust interpretation of the Montagne de Reims. David only bottles Grand Cru vineyards with 6 hectares in a few revered sights, choosing to sell off his premier Cru grapes to help fund his production. Pehu-Simonet's primary holdings are in the excellent village of Verzenay, where he has 3.5 hectares of vines and the source of this exceptional Rose Champagne, along with some fruit from the Grand Crus Verzy and Sillery.
David Pehu studied in Burgundy, and the techniques he learned continue to influence the way he makes wines, mainly the use of barrels for fermentation, something that he has done since the late 80s. It is an integral part of his style, giving the champagnes more complexity and a generous feel, and complements his no malo, high acid style very well.
Face Nord is a blend of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay, with 75% from a current single vintage and the remaining stemming from a perpetual reserve dating back to 2005. The wine sees mostly stainless steel tanks for fermentation, with 25% going into oak barrels as one of David's signatures. Face Nord Rose spends 30 months on the lees before disgorgement with a low dosage of around 4 grams per liter.
This is an excellent buy for Rose Champagne, especially considering that this is all grand cru fruit. Very few Roses are available at this number, and it's the sweet spot for Rose Champagne. Showing a superb expression of Pinot Noir with lovely minerality and a restrained but generous character, it is an incredible buy for Rose, and we have low pricing on this rare find today.
Wine Spectator 93 points! "A bright and mouthwatering rosé Champagne, with macerated raspberry and kirsch notes riding the raw silklike mousse. Creamy and harmonious, with violet, grated ginger, orange peel and blanched almond accents. Disgorged November 2021. Drink now. 95 cases imported"
Jeb Dunnuck 91 points! "Medium salmon-colored, the NV Champagne Face Nord Rosé is tangy with aromas of sour cherry, wild herbs, and orange oil. The palate is open with generous fruit through the mid-palate including mango, pink grapefruit, and salty earth. It finishes with a snap of acidity and freshness. Drink over the next 10 or so years."
