Passionate fourth-generation winemaker in Champagne Stéphane Coquillette follows in the footsteps of his father, Christian, who founded the Saint Chamant Champagne house in 1950. Stephane started his personal Domaine at 25 years old, quickly producing more elegant and lower dosage Champagnes than his father. His vineyards are a combination of Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites located in the excellent villages of Chouilly and Cuis for Chardonnay with Pinot Noir Sourced from Aÿ, and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. Stephan owns ten parcels spread throughout the different villages, all farmed sustainably and worked by hand, some of which are very noteworthy, including Le Chemin d'Avize, Les Clés, Les Carelles, La Mutry, Les Sorsous, and La Pouplot.
The Champagnes from Coquillette are very rare outside of Europe, and the Cuvee we have today, "By Louis," a tribute to Stephane's son, is the best Champagne he makes.
By Louis is a serious 100% Pinot Noir Cuvee sourced from old vines from his best sites in Aÿ and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. Vinified in barrel, By Louis spends 54 months on the lees before disgorgement seeing a very low dosage. It's a beautiful bottle that shows the best that Coquillette offers, gaining complexity from its time in barrel and on the lees showing excellent tension and freshness with elegantly placed notes of spice, fruit, and minerals with ample richness and energy. It is a long, pure, and vinous Champagne, and being 100% Pinot Noir from a vintage where it was the all-star is an added bonus.
We have some of the only bottles in the world for this Cuvee, and those that love the 2012 vintage for Pinot Noir-based Champagnes as much as we do should have no problem enjoying this. Considering the pricing of many Champagnes from this vintage currently, it's a brilliant, rare buy.
