Here is a follow up to the Rose that we offered a few days ago from Chartogne Taillet. Les Couarres is a vineyard located right in the middle of Merfy Terroir, planted between 1970 and 2009. Chartogne admits that this is a challenging vineyard to farm and is split into two parcels planted on clay and tuffa. Though there is a bit of Chardonnay grown in the vineyard, this Cuvee is 100% Pinot Noir. This site has very poor drainage, is very susceptible to frost, and the yields can get out of control if not managed. It is a vineyard that requires some patience and a slightly different mode of thinking to bring out its best. This is fermented in various older barrels and concrete eggs; Chartogne takes extra care making sure this Cuvee sees as little oxygen as possible during the elevage, with 48 months of aging on the lees. Though a labor of love, the Couarres is classified as being very age-worthy with stunning Pinot Noir expression with its rich, muscular core, yet so fresh with the perfect level of acidity to bring balance to the long finish. The Couarres is another serious creation from Chartogne and a stunning Blanc de Noirs.
