One of the top names for grower Champagne Chartogne Taillet is a personal favorite; the champagnes are stunning and have great freshness and structure. These Champagnes have a level of refinement that many Grower-Producers tend to overlook but still show incredible vineyard expression. Alexandre Chartogne is an ambitious young vigneron who trained with the famous Anselme Selosse and continues to master and remaster the vineyards that the Romans and Monks planted in the village of Merfy and Avize. He is never satisfied, follows no guidelines, and is only focused on one point, making the best Champagne he can which is why he farms organically. Today we have for the first time one of the rarest selections from Chartogne, a limited one-offCuvee that Alexandre created by secretly blending some barrels from his Avize holdings with those from Merfy. Hors Serie, bottled in 2016, was left to age on the fine lees until October 2020 and finished with a 1 g/l dosage. An exclusive Champagne with only around 3,000 bottles made, each of which is numbered. This Cuvee represents as a whole the very pinnacle of what Chartogne-Taillet has to offer, featuring his best from Merfy and Avize, showing incredible depth, complexity, concentration, and expression. This is a fascinating Champagne, and if you love Chartogne-Taillet as we do, then this is highly recommended. At the moment, we have the only bottles available in the USA of the Hors Serie.
Wine Advocate (William Kelley) 94 points! "A one-off cuvée that Chartogne produced in the 2015 vintage by blending seven barrels of vin clair from Avize with two from Merfy, the NV Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Avize & Merfy Hors Série wafts from the glass with notions of candied peel, Meyer lemon, beeswax, marzipan and pastry. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's creamy and textural, with a deep core of fruit and tangy balancing acids."
