This is one of the first Champagnes we have offered from Jean-Marc Seleque, founded in 1965 by his grandfather. Jean-Marc returned to his hometown of Pierry just outside of the city of Epernay after working abroad at Chandon's California location and a brief stint in Australia's Yarra Valley. Equipped with new knowledge and experience, he had a vision of the kind of Champagne he wanted to make, utilizing biodynamic farming, limiting yields, and plowing with horses between the vines. His goal is low and slow in the cellar, with longer colder fermentation with wild yeast, extended aging on the lees in tank, barrel, and during secondary fermentation, and finished with a low dosage. Le Quintette is a Blanc de Blanc that is sourced from 5 old parcels throughout Peirry, the Cote de Blancs, and the Marne Valley. Half of the juice is raised in Stainless steel and goes through malolactic fermentation, and the other half is raised in older barrels with no Malolactic fermentation. After extended aging, 20% reserve Chardonnay is added from a solera. This is an incredible grower Champagne, from one of the youngest forward-thinking producers, ranking up among some of the top Biodynamic-Organic addresses, and was named by John Gilman as one of Champagne's rising stars. This is not a bottle to miss for the grower Champagne lover, and we have some incredible pricing here on this rare bottle of bubbles. Make sure to check out the notes below for a more in-depth view of this beautiful Champagne.
Antonio Galloni 94 points! "(NV J-M Sélèque Extra Brut Chardonnay Le Quintette 5 Terroirs Sparkling White) The NV Extra Brut Le Quintette Chardonnay 5 Terroirs is a blend taken from sites in Vertus, Epernay, Pierry, Dizy and Mardeuil, all 2016, with 20% reserve wines. Readers will find a Champagne that balances energy and richness in Chardonnay so well. Lemon oil, white flowers, smoke and strong mineral accents build over time, leading to a finely knit, resonant finish that is incredibly beautiful. Dosage is 2 grams per liter. Disgorged: October, 2019."
John Gilman 92 points! "The most current release of Jean-Marc Sélèque’s Quintette Blanc de Blancs is from the base year of 2016. Up through the 2013 bottling, this was a vintage-dated cuvée, but Jean-Marc began incorporation of twenty percent reserve wines for this wine beginning with the 2014 base year version. This bottle from the base year of 2016, with the reserve wines from his solera he started for this cuvée a few years back. Half of Quintette’s vins clairs are raised in stainless steel and go through full malo, while the other half are barrel-fermented and do not go through malolactic fermentation. Bottling for secondary fermentation took place in July of 2017 and the wine was disgorged in October of 2019 with a finishing dosage of two grams per liter. The bouquet offers up a beautifully refined blend of pear, fresh almond, warm bread, a complex base of soil and a gently smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and beautifully balanced, with a fine core, lovely mineral drive and grip, refined mousse and a long, nascently complex and vibrant finish. This is excellent."
