NV Jose Michel & Fils Champagne Hommage (Cuvee du Pere Houdart)

$69.99
NV Jose Michel & Fils Champagne Hommage (Cuvee du Pere Houdart)
One of our favorite grower Champagne addresses making genuine wines out of the village of Moussy, and we are down to our last bottles of the Cuvee du Pere Houdart. Jose Michel's work with Pinot Meunier is some of the best in grower Champagne and shows the prestige of this grape when it is appropriately handled, giving incredible spice and exoticism without getting round and flabby. While it is one of the stars of the show here, the Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay are equally important for this Cuvee, adding a level of depth and precision that is most welcome. It is a wine featuring reserve juice from a few great Champagne vintages that go back to the 70s, and since we work directly with Jose Michel, we have unbeatable pricing here. These bottles have just arrived and have been recently disgorged, and these are the last ones we have in stock.

The Cuvee du Pere Houdart is an extraordinary bottle that Jose Michel only makes every few years, and this is a version that we have been waiting patiently to be released. This rendition of Houdart is based on the 2012 vintage with a blend of 40% Pinot Meunier, 40% Pinot Noir, and 20% Chardonnay. Having a Pinot dominant blend in a vintage like 2012 is a ticket to success, but that is not the only essential aspect to this Champagne. 60% of the Cuvee Houdart's blend comes from Jose Michel's remarkable reserve wine and for this bottling sees the fantastic vintages 1971, 1975, 1976, 1982, and 1984. Such a backlog of reserve wine not kept in a solera format is rare for Grower Champagn and allows the blend to be more customized depending on the base vintage and genuinely making it remarkable. With its high percentage of reserve wine, this Champagne shows layered complexity at peak maturity with tons of vivacity from the younger juice and fresh disgorgement creating a dynamic interplay. Mature notes of toffee, grilled nuts, fig, and mushroom met with bright citrus and apple notes. With the inclusion of the excellent Pinot base vintage of 2012, this is the best version Jose Michel has ever made and is an incredible right now. Considering the vintages that go into this and the complexity this has, it is a steal. The Pere Houdart is a superb Champagne from one of our favorite growers, and this is not a bottle to miss at this direct import pricing.
