We have a few cases of this Blanc de Blancs from Mousse Fils arriving next week, and this great pricing. As we have said before, the Mousse Family has been growing grapes since 1750 in the Marne River Valley, and all of their vineyard locations remain on the same hillside with the same exposure but span the length of four villages, which is very unique. Mousse Fils started making Champagne in 1923, and their work in the vineyards is extensive, with a wholly organic and biodynamic approach to vineyard management that sees more animals (like a mobile chicken coop they release into the vineyards) than machines.
Anecdote is a unique cuvee for Mousse and the first of its kind, as the only blanc de blancs to be made here, and a rare example of 100% Chardonnay from the village of Cuisles. Until this point, no blanc de Blancs had ever been made in this village, making Mousse fils a daring and forward-thinking address. Coming from the Lieu Dit Les Varosses, this plot has much deeper soils than the rest of Cuisles and was initially said to be a poor-quality site. While that may be true for Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay excels here and is more adapted to deeper soils. Anecdote spends 36 months on the lees and sees a low dosage at 1.5 grams, letting the minerality and terroir shine through. This is the last version of this cuvee being made, and moving forward will be a vintage Champagne, with the current release being 2019 and also features the addition of another Lieu-dit called Les Terres Rouges, which comes from Jonquery and come with a slightly higher price tag. We have low pricing on this enigmatic Champagne from Mousse Fils, another fantastic bottle from this praised house.
Wine Advocate (William Kelley) 91 points! "Moussé's newly released NV Extra-Brut Anecdote Lieu-Dit Les Varosses was disgorged in January 2021 with 1.5 grams per liter dosage. Mingling scents of citrus oil and green apple with hints of bee pollen and fresh bread, it's medium to full-bodied, taut and incisive, with a tangy spine of acidity and a saline finish."
Antonio Galloni 91 points! "The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Anecdote is brisk and finely cut. Citrus peel, white flowers and crushed rocks abound in a Champagne that is all about tension. I very much like the energy here. Dosage is 1.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: January 14, 2021."
