Jose Dhondt is a grower Champagne producer based in the village of Oger. Jose has Belgian roots with a Spanish mother, and it was the Belgium side of the family that began producing Champagne as early as 1924, but it wasn't until 1974 that the family name appeared on a bottle. Jose Dhondt practices "lutte raisonee," meaning they work as naturally as possible in the vineyard but will intervene only when necessary to save the crop from catastrophe. The Rose de Saignee is 100% Pinot Noir fruit from southern Sezanne, a subdivision of villages in the Southern Marne. This is made Saignee style where the skins from the Pinot Noir sit in contact with the pressed juice until the desired color. The juice is then bled away and fermented in stainless steel tanks and is a style that tends to have a bit more power. This rose is very fresh with intense red fruits, a subtle herbal quality, and an excellent balance between richness and acidity with a moderately dry mineral finish. The Jose Dhondt Rose is a lovely bottle at great pricing and a perfect choice for both serious grower Champagne drinker and the casual one.
