This is such a brilliant bottle of Rose from Remi Leroy, who continues to impress us with his small holdings and mastery of the Aube. Champagnes from Remi Leroy are a challenge to acquire, but they are entirely worth it, and after trying a bottle of this about a week ago, it was singing. It reminded us of a red Burgundy with bubbles which is our standard for Rose Champagne, with a beautiful presence of fruit, minerality, and some power with lovely refinement. We have low pricing on some of the only bottles in the USA, and it is highly recommended.
It has been too long since we have offered a Champagne from Remi Leroy, and after trying this Rose recently, we went on the hunt for more. Remi Leroy is part of a handful of producers doing great things in the Aube, home to adepts like Cedric Bouchard and Marie Courtin. Remi, a native of the Cote de Bar, has started bottling a portion of his harvest, a tiny three hectares, the first of the family to do so. Like many noteworthy Aube producers, Remi uses Biodynamics to his advantage, providing a lush environment for his vines to thrive with the extra work paying off in the bottle. This is an incredible vineyard-driven rose with elegant red fruits, excellent minerality a long lingering finish. Pinot Noir accounts for about 65% of the blend, with the rest being Chardonnay and still red wine for color. While mostly vinified in stainless steel, 25% does see barrel time which adds to the complexity and gives a little more roundness. Pinot Noir based Champagnes from the Aube have power, and the same goes here, but with the touch of Remi's winemaking skills, it makes for an elegant and complex Champagne. Remi Leroy Rose is a fantastic vineyard-driven Champagne from a small production up-and-comer that everyone should check out.
