NV Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne Premier Cru Brut Rosé

A follow-up to our offer of the equally fantastic Blanc de Blancs a few days ago, we have another top effort from one of the masters of Vertus. An estate since 1856, today it is run by two brothers Charles-Henry and Emmanuel Fourny, who have elevated this Domaine to significant acclaim as one of the top addresses in Vertus. The two brothers have nine hectares to their name, which they farm sustainably following strict guidelines to respect and bring out the best that their parcels of vines have to offer. Everything here is vinified plot by plot, only using the first pressing, long macerations, with partial malolactic fermentation, low dosage, and extended aging on the lees, which has become the house's signature. This is our first and only shot offering the Brut Rose, sourced from a 2-hectare 40-year-old Pinot Noir and Chardonnay plot planted on limestone and clay. Fruit is direct pressed, and the Chardonnay, along with half of the Pinot Noir, undergoes malolactic fermentation. The blend here comes to 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir from a base vintage with 30% reserve wine from three consecutive vintages, raised entirely in Burgundy barrels, spending seven months on the lees finished with a 6 g/l dosage. Though it doesn't, spend as long on the lees as some of their other bottlings; this sees a bit more Malolactic fermentation and ages in bottle for two years before release giving the Rose is ample richness and body while building more complexity. It's a fantastic style of Rose Champagne that is a joy to drink with its grand flavor profile but still has the energy and acidity to keep one engaged. Excellent note from Galloni, who calls it sublime, the Brut Rose is a bottle worth checking out.

Antonio Galloni 94 points! "The NV Brut Rosé Premier Cru is fabulous. Rich, ample and beautifully resonant in the glass, the Premier Cru dazzles from the very first taste. Unlike the Blanc Premier Crus in this range, the Rosé has more body and textural intensity, all of which make for an absolutely compelling wine. I love the vinous intensity here. Orange peel, raspberry and kirsch linger on the Pinot-driven finish. In a word: sublime. Disgorged: September, 2019."
