1986 Château Haut-Bages Libéral

$129.99
1986 Château Haut-Bages Libéral
Chateau Huat-Bages is one of the treasures of Pauillac and was founded by the Liberal family in the 18th century. Their namesake remains on the label to this day. Chateau Haut-Bages is a 5th growth in a prime spot, and half of the vineyard is behind Chateau Latour. The other half is behind Château Pichon Baron, located on the higher elevation part called "Bages," a large plateau south of Pauillac. The Chateau has changed hands a few times but has been owned by the Villars-Merlaut family since 1982, with Claire Villars currently leading the Chateau. This Bordeaux is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2 % Merlot from 30 acres of vines planted on gravely limestone and clay subsoil with vines averaging 35 years old. 1986 here, as Gilman mentions below, is one of the sleepers of the vintage and is a fantastic bottle of Bordeaux from this great year at very reasonable pricing. This is in a beautiful spot for enjoying now, and the bottles are in perfect condition (pictured above). We have low pricing on a limited amount.

John Gilman 92 points! "The 1986 vintage at Haut Bages Libéral is really outstanding and this has to be one of the great sleepers to be found in the Left Bank in this fine year. The bouquet is deep, pure and vibrant, offering up scents of cassis, black cherries, tobacco leaf, a bit of tariness, gravelly soil tones and a discreet base of smoky new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and quite tangy, with lovely focus and grip, a good core and a long, ripely tannic and well-balanced finish. This is still a few years away from really fully blossoming, but it is not a bad drink today by any stretch of the imagination. (Drink between 2018-2050)"
