2019 Bass Phillip Chardonnay Premium
Bass Phillip, established in 1979 by Phillip Jones, is a renowned Australian winery in Victoria's Gippsland region. Known for its exceptional Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, the winery has garnered acclaim for its organic and biodynamic farming practices, setting it apart in the Australian wine scene and drawing the attention of one of Gevrey-Chambertin's top winemakers, Jean Marie Fourrier, who in 2020 took over as winemaker. Spanning approximately 10 hectares, the vineyard's unique microclimate, coupled with minimal intervention winemaking, helps produce wines that truly express their terroir. The focus on low yields and careful vineyard management has been a cornerstone of Bass Phillip's philosophy, aiming to produce wines of high complexity and longevity.
This is one of the most extraordinary Chardonnays we have ever tasted from Australia, and the precision, focus, and minerality scream Puligny Montrachet with lovely aromas of orchard blossoms, yellow fruits, and liquid minerals. The fruit is focused and precise, with notes of nectarine, apricot, and delicious golden apple, echoing lovely minerality, salinity, and tons of dry extract on the palate with a kaleidoscope finish. If you love classic Chardonnay, it's a must-buy, and while it's not a cheap date, it is made by one of Burgundy's premier winemakers and gets a big recommendation from us!

Vinous (Josh Raynolds) 94 pts! "Shimmering straw-gold. A suave, highly aromatic bouquet features tangerine, pear nectar, iodine, buttered toast and fresh fig qualities, and vanilla and floral notes emerge as the wine opens up. Well-concentrated and focused on the palate, with a core of juicy acidity bracing powerful citrus and orchard fruit, honeysuckle, buttered toast and saffron flavors. Rich but refreshingly lithe, delivering superb finishing clarity and floral-accented persistence. (Drink between 2025 - 2034)"

James Suckling 94 pts! "A richly complex chardonnay that has meritorious concentration and well-built structure as its strong points. Peach and toasted brioche, pastry and hazelnut here. the palate has intense drive and depth with acidity winding the finish out long. Drink over the next five years."
