2020 Guillaume Gilles Cornas Nouvelle R Les Rieux

2020 Guillaume Gilles Cornas Nouvelle R Les Rieux

10% off 3 or more!

Guillaume Gilles was mentored by Robert Michel, who is considered one of the great Cornas producers. Robert chose Guillaume as his protegee to take over his vines, and in 2006, when he retired, he gave Guillaume the reins, leasing his incredible vineyard of Chaillot to Guillaume and allowing him to use the Michel cellar as his base of operations. The transition was flawless, and while there are no more Robert Michel wines, Guillaume can be seen as the next leg of the lineage, making some masterful Cornas following the incredibly classic style of Michel Robert and can be slightly Allemand-esque at times.

The Nouvelle R is a fantastic bottle that clocks in at slightly lower pricing than the Cornas proper and is sourced from a vineyard called Les Rieux (which is the origin of the "R"). This vineyard is situated above the amphitheater of Cornas at a high 1,500 feet of elevation. Guillaume purchased land here in 2010, planting vines on the white granite for the first time in history. Nothing was planted in Cornas at this altitude, but forward-thinking winemakers looking to venture out have started to plant beyond the previous confines of Cornas at the turn of the century. Much of this is possible because a rise in global temperature allows these previously unplated sites to achieve optimal ripeness. Its higher elevation clearly influences this wine, making it more elegant and pure than the flagship Cornas from Gilles. This is a very intriguing and unique style of Cornas that is still very classic at heart and a beautiful look at cornas through a different lens. The 2020 is exceptional and a bit more of a classic vintage from Gilles with magnificent complexity, depth, and that beautiful intersection of power and elegance. We have fantastic pricing here today on this rare Cuvee, made even better with the three-bottle discount, and it's not one to miss for Cornas.

Vinous (Josh Raynolds) 95 points! "Dark magenta. Expressive aromas of black raspberry and cherry preserves, lavender and Moroccan spices are complemented by a smoky mineral top note. Sweet and seamless on the palate, offering incisive red and dark berry, cola and floral pastille flavors, with suggestions of licorice and allspice. At once powerful and graceful in style, finishing with superb persistence and slowly emerging, polished tannins."
