I miss the old style of the Aldo Conterno wines, as bottles such as this lovely 1990 Vigna Cicala really show what has been lost here as so much new wood has been added to the equation by Aldo’s sons. The ’90 Vigna Cicala offers up a beautiful nose of red and black cherries, meaty tones, bonfires, sous bois, licorice and road tar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and still fairly structured, with a great core of fruit, tangy acids, ripe, moderate and well-integrated tannins and superb length and grip on the focused and very complex finish. This is just starting to edge towards its plateau of maturity, but really could still do with a few more years bottle age to really blossom completely. It is one of the freshest and most interesting 1990 Baroli I have tasted in several years and really shows that back in this day and age, this was one of the finest estates in all of Piemonte.
