2002 Catherine et Pierre Breton Bourgueil Les Perrieres

$49.99
2002 Catherine et Pierre Breton Bourgueil Les Perrieres

Pierre & Catherine Breton are two of the hardest-working people in the wine business and have been farming their vineyards organically for years, striving to make wines that correctly convey their exceptional vineyards. Today, we have a late ex-cellar release from the outstanding 2002 Loire vintage, featuring this classic old world wine, Les Perrieres. One of the top examples of Cabernet Franc from the Loire Les Perrieres is one of Breton's top vineyards and also one of the best examples of Cabernet Franc from the Loire. It is a site of old organically grown vines that, even in 2002, would have been around 50 years old. We have had this wine multiple times, and every time we come back to it never fails to impress us with a seemingly infinite lifespan.  The complexity of mineral and soil tones on the nose is sensational but shows no lack of fruit with a beautiful core of raspberries, spice, licorice, and rose petals. The palate is elegant and balanced with a savory component like a great Bordeaux or Rhone wine would have, finishing quite long on a mineral-tinged red fruit note. The 2002 is in a great drinking window and is the perfect choice for those looking for a properly aged wine from an old-world producer that will continue to age for many years to come. We have low pricing today on this standout, and it is highly recommended!

John Gilman 93 points! "Catherine and Pierre Breton’s 2002 vintage of les Perrières is also an outstanding example of the vintage. As readers may already know, the les Perrières bottling is the Bourgueil that the family gives the most new oak to during its élevage and this shapes the wine nicely now that it is more than twenty years of age. The bouquet is deep, pure and complex, offering up scents of dark berries, menthol, cigar smoke, dark soil tones, tobacco leaf and a judicious framing of smoky new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and shows off lovely depth at the core, with fine soil undertow, melting tannins and a long, poised and seamlessly balanced finish. This tips the scales at 12.5 percent in 2002 and is also beautifully light on its feet. (Drink between 2023-2060)"
