Jean Monnier & Fils is one of those wonderfully under-the-radar Burgundy domaines that continues to offer serious quality without the price tag of bigger domaines, and we were able to get a bit more of this one after previously selling out! The Monnier family has been making wine in Meursault since 1720, and today Nicolas Monnier oversees a 16-hectare estate with holdings spread across Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Volnay, Pommard and Beaune. Les Montrevenots is a particularly interesting parcel, situated at the southern end of Beaune, directly along the border with Pommard, where the domaine farms 0.74 hectares of Pinot Noir planted in 1995 on clay-limestone soils rich in white marl. Its position gives the wine a beautiful combination of Beaune’s perfume and approachability, with a little backbone and depth associated with Pommard. 2020 was an exceptional vintage that brought impressive concentration to Burgundy while retaining the freshness and energy that kept the best reds remarkably balanced. The Montrevenots shows red and dark berry fruit with floral notes, earthy notes, and subtle spice, carried by a silky texture, fine tannins, and a fresh, persistent finish. Now with several years in the bottle, the 2020 is beginning to open beautifully while retaining good structure to continue aging. This is a terrific example of Premier Cru Burgundy with some age from a historic domaine and an overlooked bottle that delivers exceptional value in the Côte d’Or!
