We all know Barthod for her excellent Chambolle Reds, but in 2020, she began bottling a Bourgogne Blanc from local terroir, Les Gravieres, a .5 hectare parcel she planted in the 2010s in Chambolle-Musigny, and is currently one of the only white wines we know of sourced from this appellation. The soils here are very gravelly with lots of stones, which are great for heat retention and ripening, but also provide excellent drainage and poor topsoil, which forces the roots very far down to get water, naturally restricting yields and providing some excellent concentration on these young vines. Ghislaine is also using some Amphora here to significant effect, giving a bit more oxygen during the aging process to enhance the wine's natural beauty and give a bit more stuffing, but without marking the wine with oak, which is an ingenious decision. This is the best vintage of the Bourgogne Blanc here yet and is a fantastic buy made by one of Burgundy's stand-out producers.
Vinous (Neil Martin) 90 points! "Bottled in August, the 2022 Bourgogne Blanc Les Gravières comes from vines planted in 2018 and aged in amphora, stainless steel and barrels with one weekly bâtonnage until Christmas. It has a resinous bouquet with hints of dried honey and linseed emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with tropical notes of apricot and pineapple. There’s good weight, yet the stainless steel aging hems it all in nicely. Quite delicious."
