I have had some lovely old vintages of Château Lascombes, as well as some train wrecks in modern times, particularly during my years visiting Bordeaux for the En Primeur tastings each spring. But, I had never tasted the 1975 vintage here until our recent tasting and the wine showed beautifully. It offers up a deep, complex and black fruity bouquet of cassis, cigar ash, black truffles, a lovely base of dark soil tones, hints of meatiness, incipient notes of chipotle pepper and a topnote of distant bonfire. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and really has an excellent core of fruit, with fine soil undertow and grip, moderate tannins and a long, precise and complex finish. This is a very well balanced example of the 1975 vintage, and though it still has a fair bit of backend tannin to it, the wine is drinking very nicely today and still has tons of life ahead of it.
