One of Louis Michel's top wines, Vaudésir, typically flies under the radar at the Domaine but is exceptional in 2020. Sourced from a tightly planted 0.5-hectare parcel with vines averaging 60 years of age, the site straddles steep slopes of chalky limestone clay and heavier brown clay on the western side, giving the wine both tension and breadth. Like all Louis Michel wines, it's fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel using native yeasts, with no oak influence and extended time on the fine lees to preserve clarity and terroir expression. The 2020 vintage delivered ripe, concentrated fruit balanced by hallmark Chablis acidity, and Vaudésir's amphitheater setting contributed added complexity and refinement. This is showing great now, but it will only continue to get better with age. This release offers ripe citrus, white peach, and a saline, stony finish. Still a relative bargain among Grand Cru Chablis, this wine competes with the best of the vintage in terms of both pedigree and aging potential, and we have a limited amount arriving later this week!
Jasper Morris 94 pts! "Pale lemon in colour. A beautiful and balanced bouquet, ripe fruit, stylish, completely balanced. A little touch of liquorice, but this is a fine, concentrated and nuanced wine. Like the Montée de Tonnerre, it continues to give long after the glass is empty"
Burghound 93 pts! "As was the case when I first reviewed this wine, reduction still dominates the nose at present. On the palate the lacy middleweight flavors possess a gorgeous texture while delivering excellent delineation and persistence on the balanced finale. This elegant and highly refined effort dances across the palate and it too is really quite promising yet because of it's almost delicate mouthfeel, it could be enjoyed young if that's your preference. Note that my rating offers the benefit of the doubt that will age the reduction will gradually lift."
