One of the best buys for Premier Cru Red Burgundy this vintage, the Serpentieres from Ecard is fantastic, with 2020 being an excellent example. A small operation located in Savigny less Beaune, Ecard is a brilliant little producer working less than five hectares and is currently operated by Michel Ecard, the son of Maurice Ecard, who was one of the great winemakers of Savigny les Beaune. We have been enjoying these wines since the 90s, and When Maurice retired in 2005, the family chose to dissolve the Domaine instead of splitting it up. However, Michel still had a passion for winemaking, having worked beside his father for most of his life, and was determined to create his own label. Michel arranged to rent vines from his uncle, who also had holdings in Savigny, and the rest was history.
Michel expanded upon what he learned from his father, and in a short time, it was clear that he was on the right track with wines that showed a bit more refinement than his father's wines but still had a classic sense of place. Michel is a one-person show and does most of the work in the vineyard and the cellar by himself, never using herbicides and pesticides, plowing between vines, and limiting yields with a more hands-off style in the cellar.
The Serpentieres is one of the best vineyards in Savigny and is the best wine made at this Domaine, featuring soils of gravel with iron-rich marl and some clay. The Serpentieres comes from an old vine plot that was planted in the 1930s, giving the vines some significant age. This wine shows excellent old vine concentration with aromas of dark cherry, blueberry, light spice, and incense. Full-bodied, structured, yet supple with fresh red plum and black cherry, this is excellent.
The wines from Ecard have become hard to find in the USA because their importer dropped them, and today, they don't have an official importer. Because of this, we were able to get the only bottles of the 2020 Serpentieres available in the US right now at this excellent pricing, and it's one of the top buys from this lovely vintage.
