2023 Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières

2023 Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières

Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay remains one of the under-the-radar, traditional addresses in Burgundy and is a small family estate based in Volnay with centuries of history and an increasingly strong following among those who know the wines. We just tasted the Folatières last week, and it was a sensational bottle of white Burgundy that comes in at a much lower price than their peers. Les Folatières is a particularly fascinating wine here, as it is the domaine’s only white wine and comes from old Chardonnay vines planted in the 1950s in three parcels high on the slope of one of Puligny-Montrachet’s greatest Premier Crus. Thierry Glantenay brought beautifully ripe fruit into the cellar in 2023, pressing gently before fermentation in barrel, with only about 30% new oak, giving the wine richness and texture without obscuring the vineyard's character. The 2023 is a beautiful expression of Folatières, with lemon, ripe citrus and orchard fruit joined by white flowers and subtle spice, opening with impressive breadth before a vibrant line of acidity and crushed-stone minerality brings everything back into focus. There is plenty of concentration and power, but the wine remains precise and remarkably energetic, finishing long, mineral and distinctly Puligny. Folatières has always been one of the appellation’s most compelling Premier Crus, and this is an excellent example from a domaine that remains surprisingly low-key considering the quality coming out of its cellar. We have low pricing today on this one, especially compared to the previous vintages, and it comes highly recommended!

John Gilman 92 pts! Monsieur Glantenay’s 2023 Puligny-Montrachet “les Folatières” has also been assembled in tank already in anticipation of bottling in the early spring. It is a lovely example of the vintage, offering up a bright and complex bouquet of apple, white peach, orange peel, chalky soil tones, fresh almond, vanillin oak and a lovely topnote of white lilies. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely soil-driven in personality, with a lovely core of fruit, a good spine of acidity, lovely focus and balance and a long, complex and very well balanced finish. Like most of the red premier crus chez Glantenay this year, the Folatières comes in at 13.5 percent octane in 2023. I would opt for giving this at least a few years in the cellar to allow it to blossom completely. (Drink between 2027 - 2045)

Jasper Moris MW 91-93 points! "In tank not yet prepared for bottling. Very attractive colour with a faint lime streak to the pale lemon yellow. Floral, summer flowers, and a bit of fresh yellow fruit. The acidity has held up well to match the intensity of the fruit. Some plum skins. Not the most finesse but a good sound, solid Folatières."
