We’ve been working directly with Bertheau almost since the very beginning of Envoyer, and over the years we’ve tasted nearly every vintage. Bertheau remains one of Burgundy’s most elegant and traditional producers, working in the heart of Chambolle-Musigny—one of the region’s most refined terroirs. As the saying goes, depth of color doesn’t define the quality of Burgundy, and these ruby-red wines prove that point, gaining weight and complexity in bottle while maintaining a remarkable lightness of touch and clear site expression. François Bertheau is the fifth generation at the domaine, and practices a minimalist winemaking style: 100% destemming, native yeast fermentation, and aging in mostly older barrels with less than 10% new oak. The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru is sourced from a 1.1-hectare blend of four lieux-dits—Noirots, Les Baudes (just below Bonnes Mares), and Groseilles and Gruenchers (below Les Fuées and home to some of the estate’s oldest vines)—all vinified together. We tasted the 2023s in barrel last summer, and they were among the most compelling samples we've tried from the domaine, showing a beautiful balance of fruit purity and terroir expression. The wine offers lifted red berries, fine florals, and a touch of herbs, wrapped in a delicate structure that speaks to the vintage’s finesse. This is a classic, cellar-worthy example featuring some excellent fruit and one of the best buys for Chambolle 1er this vintage!
