Domaine Taupenot-Meme isn't an address we can offer often, but the wines are exceptional, and we were able to get some of the 2019 La Riotte, which is located next to Clos de La Roche and is simply excellent this vintage. Currently run by 9th-generation winemaker Romain Taupenot, whose family has winemaking roots dating back to the 17th century, Romain is a savvy winemaker who grew up working alongside his father and grandfather, picking up the tools of the trade at a very young age. The Domaine has 9 hectares of some outstanding holdings spread throughout the Côte d'Or. Many of these sites have some impressive vine age, which contributes to the quality and character of the wines. Romain devotes most of his efforts to vine growing and, like many great winemakers, believes that good wine is made in the vineyard first, preferring a hands-off, minimal-intervention approach in the cellar. Every wine in the range expresses the vineyard character unique to each site, undergoing a destemmed cold soak with indigenous yeasts to start fermentation, a technique coined by the late great Henri Jayer. Romain has used his hand-off technique with great success, and the 2019 La Riotte is a brilliant way to experience one of the most underrated Domaines in Burgundy and is an exceptional example of Taupenot-Meme's style, which leans more towards the classic. We try to keep as much of this producer for ourselves as possible, but we have a few cases that we want to share.
Vinous (Neil Martin) 92-94 points! " The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru is stubborn and austere on the nose at the moment, red berry fruit and damp loam aromas/woodland scents gradually unfurling, hints of cepes. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit mixed with white pepper and sage. Classic in style, nicely focused, this builds in the mouth and exerts good grip on the finish with impressive length on the aftertaste. Great potential but will benefit from cellaring. (Drink between 2024-2038)"
John Gilman 92 points! " The 2019 la Riotte from Romain Taupenot is very much emblematic of his range of wines from this vintage, redolent with lovely red fruity tones, plenty of underlying soil and suave, seamless structure to reward aging. The stylish bouquet wafts from the glass in a blend of cherries, red plums, venison, coffee, a fine base of dark soil tones, bonfire and just a touch of new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and nicely plush at the core, with fine transparency and grip, fine-grained tannins and a long, complex and nicely balanced finish. Fine juice."
